Learning Tour: Arts and Culture for Community and Power Building
Capacity is limited to 42 spaces. Sign up in advance at the registration table in the Ground Floor Lobby.
This will be a walking tour to highlight how arts and culture have advanced social justice and supported community activism through the work of artists and art organizations located in downtown Oakland. It is also an opportunity to see how the arts have helped define downtown Oakland as a neighborhood, contributing to the residents’ sense of place during these very troubling times of gentrification and displacement. Our 1-mile walk will take us to hear the story of the mural that has been part of this conference’s visual identity, to see young people creating media heard on national outlets like NPR, and to hear from cultural organizations working with diverse communities in the Bay Area. Tour partners and speakers will include the
Dimensions Dance Theater,
Intertribal Friendship House,
EastSide Arts Alliance,
Los Cenzontles,
Community Rejuvenation Project,
Youth Radio, and other community-based organizations.
